Significant passage
"I just have a lot on my mind right now," I said
"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked.
I paused. I desperately wanted to say: "Where do I begin?" But as usual I just said: "It's just that Mom and I aren't getting along--again."
I knew that they would accept that response; it was the trump card I played whenever I needed to close the door on a conversation. Inside I wanted to spill my guts and have someone who cared for me reach out and simply hold me.
This passage is significant to the story because it shows how Richard secretly and desperately wanted to share his true experiences with his mother with someone else. Throughout the story, Richard feels as if people would be ashamed of him if he were to tell them his true life. Later on, he realizes that a huge load would have been lifted off his shoulder if he would have told someone about his life. This passage also describes and shows the constant internal conflict he had with himself. Richard was always debating with himself if he should open up to anyone or not. The internal conflict he had with himself made troubles down the road and caused many wrong decisions to be made. The conflict he had with himself and the desperation of wanting people to know his story collided with each other and ended up causing him trouble.
